Jim Sessa contentedly spent some time during the last two Saturdays of 2011 photographing mushrooms at the Humboldt Botanical Garden. There is much to see at the garden in every season. While the weather remains dry, plan a leisurely stroll through the Dedekam Ornamental Terrace Garden and Lost Coast Brewery Native Plant Garden or plan a more vigorous hike up through the Wildberries Natural Riparian Area, Moss Family Temperate Woodland Garden, Oliver Eitzen Lookout and All Happy Now! The garden will be open from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. this Saturday, December 24th and next Saturday, December 31st.

Take a break during this hectic time of year by visiting the Humboldt Botanical Garden. It's a great place to get in a little exercise and fresh air, or just wander around taking in a beautiful day.

If you have out of town visitors, bringing them to the garden is a wonderful way to spend a little quality time together away from the hustle and bustle.

Peter Santino's "All Happy Now" Earth Sculpture

Santino's "All Happy Now" Earth Sculpture is a merger of two ancient landscape architectural features, the ziggurat and the labyrinth, and a mathematical equation named Fermat's Spiral. Utilizing computer software Fermat's spiral was input, drafted and then extruded. The construction of "All Happy Now" was largely done by hand. There are two unique, non-intersecting quarter mile pathways which take the walker to the center and back down and out the opposite side of the sculpture entered.

Although first and foremost a work of art, the sculpture is interactive and is utilized as a labyrinth. Take your shoes off and enjoy the tactile and meditative experience of following Fermat's spiral labyrinth-ziggurat up to its center. The "All Happy Now" Earth Sculpture Garden is a wonderful space for a lively celebration or serene meditation.

Wild Mock Orange grows four to ten feet tall, typically wider than taller and has a more open habit than Western Spice Bush. Western Spice Bush grows four to twelve feet high and wide and has fragrant leaves, which are unappealing to deer.

The Humboldt Botanical Garden provides a public display of documented native and exotic plants adapted to the local climate in a planned landscape that provides an educational, aesthetic, and tranquil experience for visitors. The garden works to advance global plant conservation efforts, horticultural, botanical, and ecological knowledge; propagation and dispersal of adapted plants; and community education and development. Sustainable practices protect and conserve resources and enhance habitat for the local creatures.

An applicant for a HBGF Internship will select a project that best fits his or her education and experience. Qualified applicants are organized, disciplined, self-motivated and have a strong desire to learn to do new things well. Qualified applicants will also possess knowledge and/or interest in botanical gardens, gardening, botany, horticulture and/or design. This is an unpaid, 80-hour internship to be completed in the course of one semester.

Project #1

Develop content, design and layout of directional and interpretive signage at the Humboldt Botanical Garden.
Develop literature for self-guided garden tours including plant identification materials, landscape and planting design descriptions, local habitat and wildlife information, etc.
Work with and prepare a presentation for the HBGF Board including presentation materials, designs, mock ups, budget, manufacturing, printing and other project details.

Project #2

Identify preferred locations for display gardens to be designed and installed by Humboldt Botanical Garden and then maintained by the owners.
In particular, facilitate a project with the City of Eureka that creates a display garden in the planters on the Eureka Boardwalk.
Incorporate interpretive signage to educate Eureka Boardwalk visitors about the display garden as well as the Humboldt Botanical Garden.
Work with the HBGF Board, City of Eureka, designers, plant experts and contractors to create an eye-catching HBGF display garden from top to bottom.

Project #3

Research and write grants to support HBGF.

Project #4

Develop website content and design a web page specifically for children for www.hbgf.org using Adobe Design Premium CS5.5 with Dreamweaver, InDesign, Illustrator, Photoshop, Flash, etc.
Include interactive games. Develop and describe children’s activities at the garden and on the site.
Develop simple explanations and drawings describing science in the garden.
Create real world games and experiments that may be done at home.

The HBGF Internship provides an intern with significant real-world learning, networking and mentoring opportunities including, but not limited to presenting and defending work at HBGF board meetings; communicating with members, staff, volunteers, the public and government officials; working with office, board and garden staff to facilitate project success; working with contractors, web designers and other professionals to insure that intellectual work or design work is properly displayed or installed; and participating in committees.

We welcome and encourage all visitors to take photographs at the Humboldt Botanical Garden. All photographers are required to accept and follow all HBGF Photography Policy General Rules & Etiquette in order to protect the interests of the garden and all of its visitors. Please take a moment to read the General Rules & Etiquette.

General Rules & Etiquette

All photographers must register each photo session for approval at the HBGF Main Office. Please contact the office at (707)442-5139 or hbgf@hbgf.org.
Photographers, persons associated with photography session and photography equipment must stay on pathways and lawns at all times.
Photographers are not allowed to block pathways or visitor access to any area of the garden.
Any person or group not abiding by the HBGF photography policy on site may be required to leave.
Any person or photographer who sells photographs of the Humboldt Botanical Garden without written authorization may be required to pay royalties. See Professional/Commercial Photography Policy.
HBGF is not responsible for loss, theft or damage to photography and filming equipment.
HBGF is not responsible for any injury or death to any persons associated with permitted or non-permitted, amateur or commercial photography or filming sessions at the garden.
Photographers agree to clearly subtitle all photographs and films of the garden in print, broadcast, or online with “Humboldt Botanical Garden, Eureka, California”.

All professional/commercial photographers must have an annual $150 HBGF Photographer Membership at time of photo session.
All wedding and portrait photography must be conducted by a professional/commercial photographer.
Subject(s) of portraits must have an HBGF membership.
HBGF reserves the right to photograph for the purposes of its own marketing and publicity any photography sessions at the Humboldt Botanical Garden.

Professional/Commercial Photography Policy

All professional/commercial photographers must have an annual $150 HBGF Photographer Membership at time of photo session.

Redwood Acres HBGF Rainbow Exhibition Garden

Located at the main pedestrian entrance at Redwood Acres, the HBGF Rainbow Exhibition Garden's design was inspired by the Dedekam Ornamental Terrace Garden at the Humboldt Botanical Gardens.

Both gardens reference the individual bands of color of and order of the bands of color in a rainbow. Plants were selected for foliage or flower color and organized into long bands based on their most apparent color from red to orange to yellow and so on.

The Redwood Acres HBGF Exhibition Garden moves from one four foot band of color to the next. Plants were selected for their foliage or flower color, hardiness and overall quality and then organized based on their strongest color attribute.

The Woody & Pam Murphy Corridor Path leads the visitor up to Santino's All Happy Now Earth Sculpture. The corridor is serene and blanketed in plants native to the area. The College of the Redwoods track team regularly trains on this pathway. It is a steep incline, but it is also a beautiful run and on the way back down bay views, flowering wild roses and quaint gardens reveal themselves. The pathway is very Humboldt without going to far off the beaten path.

The Garden Paver Plaza is located at the base of the central axis of the Dedekam Ornamental Terrace Garden and within the Lost Coast Brewery Native Plant Garden. It functions as an outdoor room perfect for taking in the garden or hosting an event. Garden supporters who wish to have an engraved paving stone with their names or the names of loved ones are encouraged to contact the Humboldt Botanical Gardens Foundation main office for more information. Engraved paving stones are $200 each.
